Programme

This year Mornington will be celebrating its 16th annual Main Street Mornington - Food, Wine and
Performing Arts Festival. It’s the place where you can hear some of the Peninsula’s best local original
music.

For this one special day, Main Street will again be transformed into a stage showcasing the cultural
lifestyle available to all who live and visit the Peninsula communities. The Festival will allow punters
and families to wander among musicians and composers, listen to original songs, bump into street
performers and chat to visual artists about their work. Connoisseurs can sip wine and talk to the
wine makers while getting their gums into some local gourmet foods. You will be sure to get your
shopping direction from the fashion strutting catwalks, giving the thumbs up for Mornington’s
exclusive boutiques.

Stages will showcase original singer songwriters from the Peninsula. There will be three stages.
The Grand Hotel stage is situated at Barkly Street and will be showcasing Michael Spiby (Badloves),
Wizard and Oz, Marty Williams Band, Aaron Roberts Trio (Soul) and Meryl Leppard (recently back
from New York).

This year has a new platform called Arts Alive 2011Stage which should be down the end of Main
Street near the Esplanade. This will have performances from, Puppetability, Clandestiny (Bushdance
Band), the Distance (Contemporary Country Rock), Mande (African Percussion/Dance) and some of
Peninsula’s up and coming young talent.

The Community Stage will be situated in Blake Street this year. It will show some of our local college
students in different line ups. Thump, inspired by Stomp, will knock you over with some of their
improvisation with things as musical instruments.

There will be African percussion clubs, street theatre, buskers, puppet shows, children’s circus acts,
roving jazz bands and a cappella groups.

This Festival day is a powerful community experience and you will undoubtedly have an amazing
time being totally entertained body, heart and soul.

Michael Spiby

Winter is a great time to be locked away in a recording studio, especially if the sparks are flying. Michael Spiby has been sweating it out amongst transformers, valves, hibernating dogs and electrical leads. Enough leads you can only vaguely make out the carpet beneath. “I made a promise to myself that as soon as I’ve finished cooking up the first single I’ll untangle the black spaghetti and shave!.”

The first single ‘SoulbrotherTruckin’Song’ is an abstract musical reflection on the life of Australian artist Albert Namatjira. “I’m obsessed by his journey, his dealings with the redneck ways of white culture and ultimate dislocation from his own traditional culture. Too big a topic for my humble pop song but that was the impetus.”The process of recording this album has also been a journey for Spiby to rediscover his voice and connect his soul roots with contemporary writing. “It’s amazing how hard it can be navigating a way through to a fresh musical outcome. Staying fresh is always the challenge. That’s the fun bit.” 'SoulbrotherTruckin’Song’ is due for release late October.
Wizard & Oz
10The amazing Andrew Farrell & David McMillan aka Wizard & Oz is something to behold. With their interesting look, their vast and diverse song list and their passionate, soulful performances they are always a crowd favourite at any festival.  Andrew's incredible piano prowess  along with Dave's awesome guitar playing just add and compliment their rich, heartfelt voices. The spin they put on the classics from all genres is almost as good as their original music.  These 2 talented men from the Mornington Peninsula have been entertaining audiences all over Australia and NZ for years!
Aaron Roberts Trio
Aaron Roberts is a singer/songwriter from the Mornington Peninsula. Influenced by American soul music of the 60s & 70s, Aaron’s voice and piano reflect the spirit of that era. These virtuoso groove-masters have allowed Aaron to explore the depth of his potential as and artist and collectively experience the synaptic connection as a group.

Warner Ensemble.

Meryl Leppard
Meryl Leppard is a weaver of stories. She performs this magic at the piano, drawing us into her world with a voice that is arresting, haunting and utterly authentic. Meryl's solo shows cross genres. They are a sophisticated hybrid-cabaret of music, humour and performance poetry. Stylistically, her music ranges from jazz-like idiom, through blues and adult pop, to the sweet sounds of country cross-over. Apart from her own recordings, Meryl Leppard's songs are in film, theatre, cabaret and off-Broadway shows. Her work includes musicals, poetry, comedy skits, short stories, a dance piece and a novella.

Brad Kennedy
Brad Kennedy has been playing and writing music for a little over twenty years, often referencing the marriage of 'Poetry' and 'Music' in motion...first come the Poetry, then along came Music...the purest blend! Having played in cover bands in the early years just to get stage experience was as much a 'grind' as it was a joy...breaking free from the standard 'covers scene' was a little scarey venturing into the vast expanse that can be called 'Creation'... Brad has played in most of the old pubs & clubs in and around Melbourne and in a few rural towns over the last fifteen years, and without being fixed to any one 'niche' or 'style' of music, the 'Blues' is most comfortable...To date there are no official releases from BK, only a 1/2 dozen discs of studio recordings of 'Live stuff' straight off the desk.. .......watch this space!

Sally Carter has played at festivals across Australia. Her wild foot-stomping fiddle playing and her lyrical guitar and vocals will take you on a journey covering many styles of music, including celtic, bluegrass, gypsy, contemporary and country. CLANDESTINY
GOOD TIME CELTIC & WESTERN DANCE BAND

CLANDESTINY can happily be the band that does a bit of everything, or we can equally happily ‘theme’ the occasion and stray to other styles from a central theme. Possible ‘themes’ would be ‘Irish Night’, ‘Bush Bash’, ‘Scots Ceilidh’, ‘Hillbilly Hoedown’ etc. etc.
Peter on Guitar, Voice, Accordion, Penny Whistle, and dance calling. (Aussie) Marty on Guitars, Voice, Mandolin and Irish Bouzouki. (Irishman)
and to make up the trio, Rob – fine fiddler in all genres of music. (Geelongite)Rather than provide a song list – With a repertoire of over 300 songs and instrumentals it would take too much space

Wing Chun Kung Fu Acadamy
Ask ten different people at the Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy why they train Wing Chun and you’ll get ten different answers. “Some people train here for self-defense, others for fitness, stress-relief, improved confidence, coordination, focus, discipline, to socialize, or just for fun,” explains the instructor Master Joe Sayah. People can walk into the studio stressed, angry, and frustrated and after the class walk out relaxed, calm, and positive. The hard work of martial arts training generates self-discipline, character, fortitude, and strengthens the will to persist through difficulties and pursue perfection in oneself. The mind, body, and spirit are all connected and having a positive impact in one area affects all three. Practicing wing chun helps people empower themselves and attain greater wholeness.
